Monitoring energy consumptions of home appliances through a smartphone

System Description

Smartphone-based monitoring and control in Home Environments. Main Features:

  • Create an application for the smartphone that must be capable of advising users regarding the management of energy consumption and best practices for saving money;
  • System to monitor appliances energy consumptions through the Smartphone;
  • Provide a powerful and graphical management tool that allows system administrators to see and manage the entire sensor network in the smartphone;

Overview

A home networking system comprises an intelligent network device that monitors, controls and provides services for the comfort and safety of residents. About this system it is developed a set of applications that can integrate the use of a wide range of devices. Among these are several sensors that can be monitored to take several corrective actions, either on demand or pre-programmed based on the preferences of residents. A typical example is the individual control of temperature in different parts of the house. Another important example is the management of energy in a home.

Test-Cases Description

Test1 - In the first Test Case our goal was to estimate the consumption of the HVAC system using a accelerometer sensor.

Description and approach - To estimate the consumptions of the HVAC we measured the accelerometers values for each modes of the appliance. The tested HVAC system had four operating modes: Mode 0 - OFF (0Wh), Mode 1 - Low Power(290W h), Mode 2 - Medium Power(435W h), 3 - High Power.

Experience: Detect the estimated energy consumption for different modes of operation

Test2 - In the second Test Case our goal was to estimate the consumption of the LCD TV system using a photo-sensor.

Description and approach To estimate the consumptions of the LCD TV we measured the accelerometers values for each modes of the appliance. The tested LCD TV system had two operating modes: Mode 0 - OFF (0Wh) and Mode 1 - ON(100W h).

Experience : Detect that the LCD TV was in Mode 1 - ON
