Pollution level monitoring with WSN

Project Details:

Goal: A public transportation system can provide a suitable platform for creating environmental interaction (monitoring and actuating) applications within a city through an opportunistic approach. The mobility of buses and trains can be exploited to collect a number of environmental parameters that can be useful in controlling the pollution levels in a city.

The main goal of this project is to design and implement an embedded networked system (wireless sensor network) capable of monitoring urban pollution levels. The system composed of both fix and mobile nodes, carried in public transportation vehicles, will be able to collect environmental information and to integrate it with geographical information, likely provided by a GIS system. In a first phase, it should be possible to obtain pollution maps covering the areas served by the public transportation network. In a second phase, the sensor nodes embedded in the vehicles should interface with the communication hardware already deployed on them so that the control of pollution levels can be done in real-time. The design of the system should not preclude the possibility of integrating the public transportation network relevant information in order to make it available for an application running in a control center.
